Voluntourism is gaining popularity as people decide that they want to make a difference in other parts of the world.
Earthwatch has partnered with Travelocity to create a web site call Travel for Good, a website for travelers interested in making a difference on their next remote holiday adventure. There is information on all kinds of great trips and even some information on how to apply for grants to pay for your adventure. Voluntourism allows you to give back to the communities you visit on your travels for a couple of days or for even a few months.

The destinations vary including India, Tanzania, Brazil and many more. One particularly interesting destination is Tanzania where volunteers visit Bagamoyo, while working along side with local tribes in organizations offering services in caregiving, teaching, healthcare and community developmement. Learn more about this trek.

If you looking for a very unique spot on the Pacific shore of Costa Rica surrounded with tropical nature, sandy beaches, islands, rivers, waterfalls and a friendly atmosphere than you need to make the journey to Montazuma. It can be a bit challenging to get here but the journey is worth it. The best time to visit is between the late December to mid April during the dry season.

The Pacific Coast is a tortuous coastline of 1.016 km, with various gulfs and peninsulas. It is bordered by tropical dry forests which receive almost no rain for several months each year, as well as by mangroves, swamps and beaches. Tidal variation is quite large and there are many offshore islands. The two most important peninsulas are the Nicoya, separated from the mainland by a gulf of the same name, and the peninsula de Osa. The Peninsula de Nicoya is hilly, dry and dusty. It is known for its cattle farming and also its beach resorts.

Costa Rica has a huge variety of habitats, each with particular associations of plants and animals. The country’s extensive and ambitious national park system is an attempt to protect them all. The system begun in the 1960s and now there are about three dozen National Parks, wildlife refuges, biological reserves, and recreation areas in Costa Rica. Montezuma is situated within a wildlife corridor, which is used to enable wildlife to range over larger areas, preserving life in two different ecosystems.

Like many tropical countries there are two season: the wet and the dry. The dry season is generally from about late december to April and this is called verano (or summer). The rest of the year tends to be wet, and it is called invierno (or winter). In the north and central Pacific coast the dry season really is dry, with only one or two rainy days per month. Temperatures vary little from season to season and the main influencing factor is altitude: the Pacific averages are 23°C at night and over 32°C during the day.

Mongolia is the Land of the Blue Sky and homeland to the nomadic horsemen of Genghis Khan. The vast landscapes and nomadic culture make this a truly fascinating remote holiday and adventure destination. Explore Mongolia via mountain bike, horseback, kayak or on foot. Here are a few of the remote holidays available in Mongolia.

Mountain Trekking Adventures – The Hovsgol Mountains are an outstanding mountain walking and trekking destination, with an enormous diversity of landscapes and spectacular ridge walks.

Horseback Adventures – The most authentic way to experience Mongolia is to travel on horseback accompanied by nomads; explore the mountains, forest and steppes on the hardy Mongolian horses.

Kayaking Adventures – Mongolias river trips will transport you through nomadic landscapes, passing by herds of horses, and nomad camps, to the remote untouched corners of Mongolia.

Cultural Adventures – Mongolia has a fascinating nomadic culture and Tibetan Buddhist heritage with intriguing traditional customs dating back before Chinggis Khan. The highlight of the nomad’s year is the Naadam festival, of the three ‘manly’ sports of horse racing, archery and wrestling, held in mid-July. This is a great experience is getting closer to the culture, and the people of the country is important to you.

With visits to Thingvellir National Park to see Saga history and geology and a chance to snorkel or kayak in crystal waters. Rafting the white water of the White River. Glacier exploring and looking at some exotic birds and a bit of time riding on the renown Icelandic horse,(a visit to the famed Blue Lagoon to soak afterwards). There’s whale watching and a mountain bike ride through a parkland of lava, woodland and lichen.

Typical Iceland tour Itinerary

Saturday: You’ll arrive at Keflavik Airport early Saturday, take the “Flybus” shuttle into Reykjavik where you’ll be met by your guide, who will get you to your guesthouse. You can rest or go exploring in the world’s most northerly capitol. We’ll give you a list of things to see in town and some restaurant suggestions for lunch and dinner on your own.

Sunday: Rafting the White River – Ever wonder where the word geyser came from? You’ll see a water spout, at the Geysir site this morning, and also see the River Hvita thundering through Gullfoss, the double Golden Falls. Then below Gullfoss, you’ll experience the River Hvita, in rafts and protective gear, and spend a few hours traveling through deep gorges and exciting rapids. You’ll spend the next three nights in a comfortable hotel in Hveragerdi, with a hot pot and good beds!

Monday: Walking through History and Sampling Some Water – After breakfast you’ll head to Thingvellir National Park. Here is the North Atlantic Ridge where the tectonic plates of Europe and North America are slowly spreading apart. This is the place where Iceland’s Parliament – the Althingi, considered the oldest representative government – met for hundreds of years. You’ll have a walking tour through the historical and geological sites, and of the geothermal area at Nesjavellir. You’ll have a choice between snorkeling in the clear waters around Thingvellir or kayaking. Then back to Stokkeseyri, for a Lobster Feast at a beach-side restaurant. .

Tuesday: Glacier Walk, Nature & Bird Life – Iceland’s South Coast will be your goal, today, as you visit impressive waterfalls, glaciers, and black sand beaches formed as lava makes its way to the sea. Then you’ll head to Solheimajokull glacier, get fitted out to spend two hours exploring its vast white expanse on foot. Pretty cool! You’ll have an Icelandic buffet at the hotel tonight.

Wednesday: Viking Horses and The Blue Lagoon – After breakfast, you’ll get to try some of the Iceleandic horses that have been in the fields everywhere! You’ll get helmet (and rain gear, if necessary) and the guides will give you a horse that’s good for your skill level- whether your a novice or experienced. You’ll enjoy an hour and a half on the soft grass and lava trails in the pretty river valley around the farm.

The sport of kiteboarding has taken off in the Grand Beach area. There are many people out taking in the high winds and warm weather. The sport is a fairly new sport that is seeing a surge in growth over the last few years especially in this remote Canadian location.

Grand Beach is located on Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Being a large lake with consistent north or south winds, its an ideal destination for Kiteboarding. Riders can launch from the east beaches and enjoy riding up and down in along the shore in both winter and summer. There are many locations on Lake Winnipeg for kite surfing. Lake Winnipeg is a fairly shallow lake near its edges which provides a great environment to learn to kiteboard safely. View the interactive Google map of the Manitoba Kite Locations.

Accomodations and more information on the area can be found at the Grand Beach Tourism web site.
