western sahara

Western Sahara

Originally started as a paleontological tour company, Sahara Overland provides a unique opportunity to travel to the rich lands of Morocco to collect your own treasures. Morocco has a great variety of minerals and fossils to mine free of charge. Some of the minerals include quartz, aragonite, vanadinite, azurite, malachite and a large selection of agates.

If trilobites are your fancy, dig for bugs at many plentiful sites such as the well known Devonian Mt. Issimour, the Ordovician rock of Tiskaouine or the Cambrian site at Toghacht. In Erfoud, there are dozens of rock shops filled with fossils from south Morocco, including dinosaur teeth from a famous nearby locality. Find ammonites and cephalopods in a region so rich you can actually pick them up off the ground as you walk along.

A large variety of Jurassic and Cretaceous specimens such as fish, turtles, and dinosaur material and one of the largest ammonite localities worldwide is found near Midelt, the mineral capital of Morocco.

Unlock the magic of Morocco through the Imperial Cities of Fez, Marrakech and Rabat. Enjoy watching snake charmers and fortune tellers while sipping mint tea, listen to the Prayer Call descending from the Minarets, discover the art of Moroccan handicrafts and marvel at the ancient Arab architecture dating back to 800 A.D.

Leave the cities and turn toward nature as you travel over the Atlas Mountains into the Sahara Desert. View awesome stratigraphy and enjoy unparalleled photographic opportunities. The contrast between green meadows and desert landscape through the snowcapped mountains is both striking and unforgettable.

Off road travel in Morocco is an adventure based on taking roads and tracks that most vehicles and unguided tourists can’t access. This presents many opportunities to closely observe the authentic way of living from the Berber tribes of the Atlas Mountains to the Nomads of the Sahara. Off road traveling also allows outdoor camping, photography of spectacular scenery and natural wildlife, and enjoying the beauty of the night stars.
